Oatmeal is one of the great healthy breakfasts for good reason: It's cheap, quick, and full of the nutrients you need to start the day off right. Unfortunately, plain oatmeal can also be super underwhelming. Luckily, it doesn't have to be that way. With the right choice in toppings, oatmeal can be straight-up dreamy. Here are some of the our favourite ways to make oatmeal live up to its fullest, most delicious, potential.

Honey

Honey boasts a ton of health benefits, like being antibacterial and high in antioxidants. Not to mention, honey is a natural sweetener so it won't spike your blood sugar levels like processed sugars do. A drizzle of honey atop some oats provides the perfect amount of sweetness to wake you up.

Frozen Fruit, Nuts & Granola

Stash some fruit bits in your freezer, and you'll always be able to have fruit in your oatmeal! Add them to the mixture straight away and they'll defrost by the time the oatmeal is ready and infuse the oats with their juice. We also love to sprinkle in some granola - double the oats, double the texture and flavour - you're welcome! Granola not your thing but still looking for that crunch? Topping your oatmeal with nuts and seeds makes it extra hearty too! Pumpkin seeds, almonds and pecans are some of our favourite kinds to add.

Your Favourite Tea

If you're looking to integrate some flavor into your oatmeal and not just atop of it, we have THE hack for you. Steep tea of your choice into water or milk for about seven minutes, then add your oats for some extra flavor. Chai is perfect for this recipe because it's made of aromatic spices like cardamom and ginger to warm you up.

Yoghurt

A hybrid of the two best breakfast foods, combine your oats with yogurt for a healthy dose of calcium and probiotics. If you're looking to increase your protein intake, choose Greek yogurt. Regardless of the type of yogurt you pick, you're guaranteed a creamy, filling bowl of oatmeal.

Nut Butter

Nut butters are a great way to keep you fuller if a regular bowl of oatmeal won't do the trick. A little goes a long way and adding nut butters in your oatmeal will make your breakfast contain an extra set of vitamins and minerals! Our favs? Almond butter and super seeds butter for that rich, salty flavour and a healthy dose of fats.
